Roanoke County Jail Roster

The Roanoke County Jail Inmate Roster in Virginia is a public resource that allows anyone to check who is currently in custody. RoanokeCourt.us helps quickly find publicly available information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the Sheriff's Office, by calling the jail line, or by visiting the institution's lobby in person. The roster enables citizens to check a person's custody status, view charges, and find out the booking date. This transparency tool is maintained by the Jail Division of the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office, is regularly updated, and is hosted on the county's official web portal.

Find Roanoke Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created when a person is officially taken into custody. It is the first document that records the fact of detention. During the booking procedure, the following data is generated:

  • Unique Booking Number
  • Date and time of admission
  • List of charges at the time of detention
  • Arresting agency (county police, sheriff, other agency)
  • Basic identifying information of the detainee

The quickest way to view these records is the online inmate search system on the county's website. The portal displays current data for individuals currently in custody. For more detailed information, including changes in charges, the official portal recommends referring to the Virginia Courts Case Information System.

If you need records not available in the online database — such as archival bookings or copies of police reports — submit a public records request in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). For copies of police reports, contact the Roanoke County Police Records Division at 540-777-8605.

Search the Roanoke Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The inmate search portal offers two main methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the appropriate field. This is a required parameter. The first name is optional but significantly narrows the results if the last name is common. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one mistake can prevent finding the record.
  • Try entering only the first few letters of the last name if the exact spelling is unknown.
  • The system does not distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters.

Search by Booking Number or Global Subject Number

If you have the Booking Number or Global Subject Number — enter it in the appropriate tab. This method provides an exact result without the risk of confusion with namesakes.

If the Search Yields No Results

  1. Ensure that the person is held at the Roanoke County/Salem Jail, not at the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center — this is a separate facility.
  2. The person may have already been released or transferred to another facility.
  3. Call the jail docket line: 540-283-3162.
  4. For individuals sentenced to imprisonment in state correctional facilities, check the state Inmate Locator.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Roanoke

The inmate roster on the Roanoke County portal is updated regularly, but it is not a real-time system in the absolute sense. There may be a delay between the actual booking and the appearance of the record in the online database — from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the facility's workload and time of day.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • Booking delay. A recently detained person may not yet appear in the system until the booking procedure is completed.
  • Disappearance of records after release. The roster displays only individuals who are currently in custody. After release, transfer, or posting bail, the record usually disappears from the public search.
  • Not an archive. The portal does not store a complete history of all past bookings. To obtain archival data, an official request must be submitted through FOIA.
  • Changes in charges. The initial list of charges may change after a court decision. Current case information can be checked through the Roanoke County Court Case Search or on the Virginia Court System portal.

If you do not find the information you need online, the most reliable option is to call the jail directly at 540-283-3162. The operator has access to internal records that may not yet appear on the public portal.
